A short Blackwood bibliography of recent reprints

Blackwood in recent publishing

Many of Blackwood's books have been reprinted not once, but several times over the years. However, there has been a surge of reprints in recent years. If one has to pinpoint when this begun, it might be said to have started with the collection The Magic Mirror edited by Mike Ashley and his Algernon Blackwood, a Bio-Bibliography published by Greenwood Books in 1987. Or maybe it started with the Dover reprint of the collection Best Ghost Stories by Algernon Blackwood from 1974. At the start of the 21th century, the British publisher House of Stratus and the US Wildside Press launched a line of reprint editions. Other publishers as Penguin Books, Tartarus Press, Stark House Press, Hippocampus Press, Turtle Point Press, Luminist Publications have followed.

Many of Blackwood's books is not under copyright any longer, at least in the US. A factor that benefits reprints. Until a few years ago copyright protection ran for 50 years from the author's death, so that at the start of 2002 all of Blackwood's work would have been in the public domain. However, a few years back copyright protection was extended to 70 years, so there is still another 20 years in which Blackwood's work still is protected in Europe. In US there is an exception to this rule, amended to avoid conflict with earlier legislation. So in effect all of Blackwood's work published prior to 1923 is in the public domain in US but later work is still protected.

The newfound flurry of publishing activity has made it possible once more to obtain many of Blackwood's best known books. This is good news, since the original editions are in many cases costly or simply unobtainable. However, some of the reprinted editions are once again out of print or hard to find. Hopefully more reissues will be made available in the near future. Many of the Blackwood titles listed below are currently in print and can by bought over the net from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and others. The editions from the publishers NuVision and PageTurner are only available as e-books, while Kessinger issues both e-books and simple paperbacks.
