| RICHARD ASHCROFT Hero: Brian Wilson It's really difficult to find one. But Brian Wilson keeps springing into
my mind. Obviously They're the sort of people that inspire me - people who lay something down on record that's never gonna run out, it's got no sell-by date on it. With the limited equipment they had then, he still brought out this incredible music, when people at that time were struggling to get these sounds. Music now has become a pre-set thing, where someone switches something on and gets a sound and that'll fuckin' do. But these people had to distort and contort all these bits of equipment, and their imaginations had to be so huge to reach these sounds. And he was like that. How much he gave to music, and how much it took for him to get over those peaks in his career. And George Best's definately on my list. I loved him as a kid. Obviously I ever got to see George, but his legend was still there in the ground, you could feel it. I love the idea of these people that have this intense flame, this natural ability - and no amount of schooling and no amount of training is gonna make a George Best. He even ended up presenting us with our Brit Award. That was the only time I've ever met him. It was brief and intense, but it was amazing to meet him. |
