Sverigeleden is described in three guide books:
Turist & Cykelguide Sverige, 2 - sydvästra
delen, by Lasse
Brynolf, ISBN 91-7902-311-8.
Covers the western half of southern Sweden,
from the south
coast up to a little north of Mora.
Turist & Cykelguide Sverige, 3 - sydöstra
delen, by Lasse
Brynolf, ISBN 91-7902-310-X.
Covers the area from the south coast of
Blekinge up to
a bit north of Rättvik.
There is also a part 1, which covers the
northern part
of the country.
The books are available in good book stores
and in
the map and guide book shop outside Stockholm
central
station. The price per book is SEK 160 -
170 approx.
I suppose you can also buy them directly
from Svenska
Cykelsällskapet.
The roads that are used for Sverigeleden
appear to have
been picked mainly to be safe and take you
through beautiful
countryside. Most of the time, Sverigeleden
is not the shortest
way from point A to point B. With the maps
in the books you can
make out your own shortcuts if you like.
In some densely
populated areas, for example Märsta
and some of Stockholm's
suburbs, Sverigeleden makes many tricky
turns and bends
(sometimes unnecessarily in my opinion),
and you may need the
map to find it if you lose it.
If you need to buy food or drink, do it in
the first store you
see, because it's quite far between them
along most stretches
of Sverigeleden.
There is not much about camping in the books
but they contain
a list of phone numbers and other information
you can use to
plan your overnight stays.
The maps in the books are in 1:250 000, and
the pages are
not very big, so you may want to complement
them with a
bigger map to get a better overview of where
you're going.
My favourite part of Sverigeleden is the
one between Binneberg
and Torbjörntorp, maps 116 and 115
in book 2. (If you want the
ride to last a bit longer, start in Tidan
instead of Binneberg.)
Beautiful landscape and many sights to see
along the way. An
obvious place to stop at is Varnhem, with
the medieval church
where many Swedish kings are buried, the
ruins of the monastery,
a couple of museums, café and grocer's
shop.
A little later you will get a good view
of Hornborgasjön, in
the springtime a favourite spot for bird
watchers.
When you get to Torbjörntorp I suggest
you leave Sverigeleden
and enter central Falköping. Then take
the road to the top of
Mösseberg where you will find a restaurant,
an outlook tower,
a small zoo, a playground, an excellent
picnic area and a
large parking lot.
