First, it takes energy to build and maintain life, and everybody finds "natural" pleasure in fulfilling this requirement. Cf. Paradoxical Regularity.

Second, cooking illustrates how an industrial specification and the associated procedure combine, somewhat like the genes and nurturing combine to shape a biological being. Cooking is actually an example of industrial activity in the wider sense discussed elsewhere on this site. Any dish that has a name and a specification is an industrial product. Also, typical for industrial products, most named dishes have several specified variants!
