Sustainable development: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

We are survival machines, but 'we' does not mean just people. It embrace all animals, plants, bacteria, and viruses. ... We are all survival machines for the same kind of replicator - molecules called DNA - but there are many different ways of making a living in the world, and the replicators have built a vast range of machines to exploit ... Our DNA lives inside our bodies. It is not concentrated in a particular part of the body, but is distributed among the cells. There are about a thousand million million cells [100 000 000 000 000 ? - editor's note] making up an average human body, and, with some exceptions that we can ignore, every one of those cells contains a complete copy of that body's DNA.
Our basic biological needs are the four Fs: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and ... Mating.
If there is a purpose to the universe, and it achieves that purpose, then the universe must end, for its continued existence would be gratuitous and pointless. Conversely, if the universe endures forever, it is hard to imagine that there is any ultimate purpose to the universe at all. So cosmic death may be the price that has to be paid for cosmic success. Perhaps the most that we can hope for is that the purpose of the universe becomes known to our descendants before the end of the last three minutes.
