Situated in the middle of the country at 1300 m above sea level, the lake
offers a pleasant climate.
The lake is 22 x 11 km but only about 3 m deep.
The Intha people living around the lake often propel their canoes standing
on one leg at the stern and wrapping the other leg around the oar.
There are, of course, alternative modes of transportation...
In addition to fishing, many people grow rice and other crops on the
lake shores, and many of the crops are also cultivated on floating islands
such as these ones seen from the Nga Phe Kyaung monastery.
Nyaungshwe, also known as Yaunghwe, is a town on a channel a few km
north of the lake.
Monks receive rice every morning.
Sunset in Nyaungshwe: Pagoda and
the silhouette of a monk inside a monastery.
In addition to the lake itself I visited several
villages in the area.
