Mawlamyine
In the market Mawlamyine, or Moulmein as the British called this town, is oddly enough known from Kipling's poem Mandalay in which a Burma girl was "a-setting by the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea".

Mawlamyine harbour This man asked me to take his picture when I was watching a few other men, including the man in the background, unload bags from a boat in the harbour.
The reason why I decided to spend a day here was that my guidebook suggested that "if you're wondering what Yangon and Mandalay looked and felt like ... before they hit the development fast track, come to Mawlamyine." It's been a few years since the publication of that book but I believe that in some sense it still holds true, although some people may claim that both Yangon and Mandalay have a ways to go before hitting any kind of "development fast track".

This concludes our trip around Burma/Myanmar. Would you like to go there yourself? If you are wondering about the political situation you may want to take a look at the information the folks at Lonely planet have provided and follow some of their links to more information.
