Ny-Ålesund is a centre for arctic research and this small village is also a breeding colony for Arctic Terns (bottom right) seeking indirect human protection from predators. Visitors are well advised to watch out for these fierce locals. One common way to protect yourself is to carry a stick above your head and let the birds do battle with it instead of your head.
