Raudfjord
Our first camp was at Raudfjord in the north-western part of Spitsbergen island.

The Svalbard Poppy comes in white and yellow.
Descending

On glaciers and large patches of snow, you walk in line. We made a detour to see this scenic lake on our way back to camp.
Raudfjord tent camp
The camp was situated a few hundred metres from the fjord. The air was remarkably clear despite the low cloud cover. The white tents were used for cooking and storage.

Norwegian flag on M/S Brand

M/S Brand picked us up around 21h00 on 5 August and since it was a clear and sunny night, the crew suggested we turn night into day and push on to Woodfjord and Liefdefjord, east of Raudfjord.
Bearded seal on ice floe

The decision turned out to be a good one. Not only did we see a bearded seal at close range...

Tiny white speck claimed to be a polar bear (inset from Svalbard Museum
by Ulla Torsmark).

...but we also spotted this tiny white speck, and although the photo doesn't really do it justice, everybody who had binoculars could clearly see the polar bear on the shore. In fact, the presence of the polar bear prevented us from landing on the beach as originally planned.

Isbørn pils label

Those of you who can't quite make out the animal in the above photo, can perhaps get an idea of what it is supposed to look like from this beer bottle label.

Sleepy but happy with our night, we went to bed shortly after breakfast while the ship turned back south and set course for our next destination: Ny-Ålesund.
